Methodology

How we verify products

Products are tested by independent ISO/IEC 17025 or similar accredited laboratories. Defacto's Quality Department then audits the lab data separately - two independent layers of verification before a product earns the Defacto mark.

1
Brand uploads Certificate of Analysis
The brand uploads their CoA - the raw lab output from independent testing at an ISO/IEC 17025 or similar accredited laboratory. This is the source document Defacto verifies.
2
Lab accreditation verified
We verify the issuing laboratory holds current ISO/IEC 17025 or similar accreditation and that the analytical methods used are validated and appropriate for the tested analytes. Non-accredited results are not accepted.
3
Defacto Audit - Quality Department review
Defacto's Quality Department independently cross-examines the lab data: batch alignment, analytical methods, analyte consistency, and label claim accuracy. This is the second independent layer - the lab tests, Defacto audits.
4
Results published publicly
Products that pass earn the Defacto mark. Results are published on the brand's product page via the Defacto widget. Lab results are published so consumers can make informed decisions based on verified data, not marketing claims.

What We Verify For

6 verification categories depending on the product type and claims made by the brand.

Label Accuracy
Does what's on the label match what's inside?
Every active ingredient is tested and compared to the label claim. Results expressed as a percentage (e.g., 97% of claimed dose found).
HPLC · LC-MS/MS · Gravimetric
Contaminant Screening
Were any harmful substances or metals found?
Lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, pesticide residues, BPA, phthalates. All results compared against FDA, EU, and CA Prop 65 regulatory limits.
ICP-MS · GC-MS/MS · LC-MS/MS
Microbial Safety
Were any harmful bacteria, mold, or pathogens found?
Total plate count, yeast & mold, E. coli, Salmonella, and additional pathogens as required. Ensures the product is safe for daily consumption.
USP <2021> · USP <2022> · ISO 4833
Stability & Shelf Life
Will this still work by the expiration date?
Potency tested at manufacture and at projected shelf-life endpoints. Moisture content and dissolution testing confirm the product maintains effectiveness.
Accelerated stability · ICH Q1A
Allergen Verification
Do the "free-from" claims on the label hold up?
Gluten, soy, dairy, tree nuts, shellfish, and other allergen-free claims independently tested. Any trace detection is flagged regardless of threshold.
ELISA · PCR · LC-MS/MS
Identity & Authenticity
Is this actually what it claims to be?
DNA barcoding and spectroscopic fingerprinting confirm the species and identity of botanical and herbal ingredients. Detects adulteration and substitution.
DNA barcoding · FTIR · TLC

Not every product requires all categories. Testing scope is determined by the product type, ingredient profile, and claims made on the label.

How we score

Our independence principles

Defacto Labs is a verification body - not a lab, not a brand partner. Data integrity determines the outcome.

Defacto Labs Quality Assurance Officer reviewing scientific data
Independent audit layer
Products are tested by ISO/IEC 17025 or similar accredited laboratories. Defacto's Quality Department then separately audits the lab data and supporting claims - two independent layers of scrutiny.
Earned, not bought
Defacto's Quality Department reviews the laboratory data, batch information and product claims before a product is verified. A product earns the Defacto mark only when the data supports what is being claimed.
Full certificate access
The complete Certificate of Analysis (COA) is downloadable from every verified product page. Consumers and regulators can verify directly with the lab.
How we're different

Defacto Labs vs. Traditional Certifications

Traditional certification programs give you a badge. Defacto gives you the data.

Full test data published publicly - consumers see actual numbers
Label accuracy shown as exact percentage
Individual ingredient results (label vs. tested)
Specific contaminant measurements (not just pass/fail)
Results displayed on product pages via widget
Accredited laboratory testing
Certificate of Analysis with unique ID for each product
Ongoing verification - not a one-time certification
Traditional Certifications (NSF, Informed Sport, USP, ConsumerLab, BSCG)
Badge only - no underlying data shown to consumers
Pass/fail only - no granular accuracy data
No individual ingredient measurements shared
Contaminant results not publicly available
Results live on certification body's website only
Focus primarily on banned substance screening
Annual certification model with limited transparency
High cost barrier for smaller brands

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about Defacto Labs, our testing, and how verification works.

Defacto Labs is an independent supplement verification platform. Using ISO/IEC 17025 or similar accredited laboratories, we verify ingredient purity, potency, and safety for supplement brands. Verified lab results are published publicly so consumers can make informed decisions based on tested data rather than marketing claims.

Independence is structural. Verification runs in two separate layers: an ISO/IEC 17025 or similar accredited laboratory performs the physical testing, and Defacto's Quality Department independently audits that data. Because those layers are held by different parties, neither can quietly wave a product through. Brands pay for the verification process, not for an outcome.

No. Brands pay for the review process, not for a verification outcome. A product receives the Defacto mark only after Defacto's Quality Department has reviewed the laboratory data and confirmed that the evidence supports the claims being presented.

The laboratory performs the physical analysis and issues a Certificate of Analysis (CoA). Defacto does not test products itself - we verify the science. Our Quality Department cross-examines the CoA for batch alignment, validated methods, analyte consistency, and label-claim accuracy before a product can earn the Defacto mark.

Defacto verifies 200+ analytes across 5 categories: Identity & Potency, Contaminants (heavy metals, pesticides, mycotoxins, solvent residue, PAHs, allergen cross-contamination), Microbiological safety, Label Claims (sugar, organic, GMO, vegan/vegetarian, gluten), and Stability & Shelf Life. Scope depends on the product type, ingredient profile, and the claims a brand makes on the label.

Accredited labs use ICP-MS for heavy metals at parts-per-billion sensitivity, HPLC for ingredient potency and identity, LC-MS/MS for pesticides, mycotoxins and contaminants, GC-MS for volatile compounds and solvent residues, and ELISA for allergen proteins. These are the same analytical methods required by the FDA and European regulatory bodies.

Every ingredient's tested value is compared to its label claim and expressed as a percentage (for example, 1,940 IU found against a 2,000 IU claim = 97%). The accepted range is 90-110% of label claim. Results from 84-89% or 111-116% receive a warning; below 84% or above 116% is a fail. Contaminants and safety results are scored against FDA, EU, and other applicable regulatory limits.

Defacto accepts Certificates of Analysis from any ISO/IEC 17025 or similar accredited laboratory. Established labs with verified accreditation include Eurofins Scientific, SGS, Intertek, Bureau Veritas and Tentamus Group across Europe; LGC (Informed Sport), Campden BRI and RSSL in the UK; and NSF International, Alkemist Labs and ChromaDex in the United States - among hundreds of others.

Each passed test unlocks claims in two tiers. Bundle claims are single headline badges that publish automatically when a test passes - "Heavy metal free", "Verified non-GMO". Granular claims are the per-analyte proof behind each bundle - "Lead free", "Gluten free", "Vitamin D verified" - which the brand chooses to display. A brand can only ever display what its lab data supports.

Yes. Results publish on the brand's product page through the Defacto widget, and the complete Certificate of Analysis is downloadable from every verified product page. Consumers and regulators can review the underlying data and verify it directly with the issuing laboratory.

Laboratory accreditation

Product testing must be performed by independent laboratories accredited to recognised standards, such as ISO/IEC 17025:2017, or similar, with the relevant analysis covered by the laboratory's accredited scope.

ISO/IEC 17025 is the international standard for the competence, impartiality and consistent operation of testing and calibration laboratories. Accreditation provides confidence that testing is carried out using qualified personnel, appropriate methods, controlled processes and documented quality systems.

Defacto does not accept in-house brand testing, results from laboratories without current accreditation documentation, or test reports where the relevant analysis cannot be supported by the laboratory's accredited scope.

ABOUT DEFACTO LABS

Defacto Labs is an independent verification platform. Products are tested by independent ISO/IEC 17025 or comparable recognised standards. Defacto's Quality department then audits the lab data separately - cross-checking methodology, batch data, and product claims against the raw lab output. Two independent layers before a product earns the Defacto mark. Lab results are published publicly so consumers can make informed decisions based on verified data, not marketing claims.
